Fr. Shamindra Jayawardena OSB

Fr. Shamindra Jayawardena OSB was elected as our new Conventual Prior at the elective Chapter held at Monte Fano, Ampitiya, Kandy on the 21st of November 2013 in the presence of the Abbot General Rt. Rev. Michael Kelly OSB. He is the youngest son of Mr. Basil Jayawardena and Mrs. Chandra Ranasingha of Hendala, Wattala and belongs to the Parish of Nayakakanda of the archdiocese of Colombo. He has been an active member of the parish even from his younger days serving as a member of the alter serves union, junior Legion of Mary and the parish choir. He studied at St. Anthony’s College, Wattala under the De La salle Brothers and later joined the Benedictine Junior Seminary in Katugastota and was sent to St. Anthony’s College, Kandy for his secondary education. He is a Pastoral and Clinical Psychologist. He holds a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology (BA. Hons) from the University of Peradeniya, Sri Lanka. And  also a Licentiate in Pastoral & Clinical Psychology (L.Psy) from the Institute of Psychology at the Pontifical Gregorian University, Rome which aims to prepare specialists in psychology who harmonize the ‘spiritual’ and ‘psychological’ dimensions in the various apostolates at the service of the Church. As a Psychologist he is trained in administration, interpretation and evaluation of psychometric testing, and has a particular interest in personality psychodynamics of the formation of religious cults and the human and spiritual processes underpinning priestly and religious identity and the motivation for entrance, perseverance, and effectiveness in the priestly vocation. He has also obtained the Philosophical and Theological degrees (B.Ph & B.Th) from the Pontifical Urban University, Rome. He has served as a Lecturer of Psychology, University of Peradeniya and a Lecturer of Religious and Social Psychology at the Blessed Joseph Vaz Deva Dharma Nikethanaya (Sinhala Theologate), Colombo. As a priest he has served at the parishes of Wahacotte, Puttalam and Thoduwawa. At the time of his election he was the Warden and Administrator of the Benedictine Fathers’ Hostel at St. Anthony’s College, Kandy. He is a musician and has composed many hymns for liturgical singing. We wish him God’s choicest blessings and best wishes.
