The Parish of St. Ignatius at Ampara belongs to the Diocese of Battocaloa. Ampara is a multi religious area. The Catholic Community in the Parish of Ampara is a very vibrant Community. We the Benedictines have further expanded our presence by taking over this mission in the Diocese of Batticaloa to serve the people of God. It is on the invitation of the Bishop of the Diocese of Batticaloa, His Lordship Rt. Rev. Dr. Joseph Ponniah that the Priory decided to launch out this mission. Rev. Fr. Seemanpillai Bastianpillai OSB, a Priest Monk with vast pastoral experiences, having served in the Shrine Parish of Wahacotte, Idalgashinne and Warakapola is appointed as the first Benedictine Parish Priest of Ampara. The Parish was officially handed over to the Priory on 30th March 2014 by the Bishop of the Diocese.
This is a vibrant Catholic Community. The Parish consists of the main Church and two other historically significant Substations. One is in Inginiyagala which is the famous Shrine of Our Lady of Fatima with a range of mountains at Her background. This consists of twenty to thirty Catholic families scattered among the Buddhists. The other Substation is in Hingulana, the Church dedicated to St. Anthony with a historic Calvary attracts a huge number of Pilgrims especially during the season of Lent. The main Parish Church of St. Ignatius of Loyola also has a Catholic population of hundred to one hundred and twenty five families.
Catholics at Ampara has just begun a new journey with the Benedictine Congregation with the sole intention of getting themselves immersed in the Benedictine Spirituality. Our wish is the same i.e. to evangelize the people of Ampara to know the Lord more closely. Our prayer is that the Holy Spirit be our guide as we begin this new mission and the Holy Spirit may also open the minds of the people to be receptive to the Gospel truths.
